What is a
music video?
In general terms, a music video is a short film that
integrates a song and imagery. Music videos are produced for artistic purposes
and as a method for promotion. Modern music videos are used as a marketing
tool. A good music video will capture the attention of the viewer and is memorable.
Videos are often split into three groups: Narrative, Performance and Abstract.
Narrative videos tell a story that is often related to the song lyrics, the
artistes often perform as characters in the story. Performance is where the
artiste performs the song. This can be based around a live performance or an
edited and constructed performance. Finally, abstract is where the video is the
artiste’s interpretation of the music. The lyrics are unrelated to the images
and the artistes don’t often appear in the video.
Britney
Spears- Toxic
This music video is an example of a narrative music video because she
is telling a story where the video is a visual representation of the lyrics and
the both tell a story. This is a common type of music video as it appeals to
the mainstream pop audience. This is as the video and the lyrics tell a story
so it’s easier to understand what the meaning of the song is about.
Royal Blood- Lights Out
This music video is an example of a
performance because the song mostly features the artistes performing the song.
This style of music video is most commonly seen in rock as the style is heavily
focused on the band rather than just a pop artiste. This song shows the two
band members performing the song accompanied by backing dancers. Again, this is
another traditional music video style seen in a lot of mainstream music videos.
Tool- Vicarious
This is an example of an abstract music video
as the lyrics and the video are unrelated. The music video is the artiste’s
interpretation of the music and they use unrelated imagery to tell the story.
The music video also doesn’t feature the artistes themselves which is uncommon
in most mainstream music videos. An abstract music video is uncommon and is
normally found in smaller uncommon genres such as prog-rock and prog-metal.
These are a lot less common as the music videos are confusing and are unrelated
to the lyrics.
